Book Design For A Retrospective Of Boris Mikhailov

This project focuses on the book “Boris Mikhailov: Yesterday’s Sandwich,” which delves into Mikhailov’s Superimposition series from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The series features a unique combination of glamorous images and the gritty realities of Soviet life. The book, the first of its kind for this body of work, showcases 52 color tableaux on unbound boards, presented in a specially designed folder and slipcase. The creative design draws inspiration from the notion of Kodak slides, enabling an interactive experience. The book's casing, made from raw grey board and adorned with gold foil-blocking, elegantly contrasts Soviet reality with notions of beauty. Mikhailov’s accompanying text is printed on low-cost magazine paper, reminiscent of Soviet publishing, adding to the book’s uniqueness and collectibility.
